Creating Healthy Places to Live, Work & Play (CHP) contractors across the state are working to prevent obesity and type 2 diabetes by making it easier to be physically active and to increase consumption of healthy foods.
In order to make it easier for people to be more physically active and eat healthier foods, we are implementing specific initiatives.
HKHNY (Healthy Kids, Healthy New York)
HKHNY works to address screen time reduction, increase physical activity and encourage healthy eating in after school programs. CHP offers training to after school providers and can offer workshops with youth catered to the site needs.
Growing produce is a great way to have easy access to fresh fruits and vegetables. CHP can assist in creating and sustaining a successful garden. In addition to assistance in the planning, designing and sustaining of the garden, workshops are offered to teach participants about gardening topics.
Our goal is to increase the variety, visibility and overall shelf space allotted to fruits and vegetables in local convenience stores and to help residents realize that they can make healthy choices when they shop.
Plentiful Partnership of Niagara
Each year food is left in fields or goes bad. CHP is working to increase the local harvest by working with area distributers to better connect produce with those who need it. This will provide the opportunity to increase community consumption of fruits and vegetables.
Joint Use Agreements
Joint use agreements are policies that allow the use of public schools and facilities by the public. We are working with local schools and districts to publicize facility availability which provides a safe and convenient place for residents to be physically active.
Walking Trails and Streetscaping Improvements
Establishing or promoting the use of community trails will also provide safe and convenient places for residents to be physically active. Keep an eye on The Main Street Historic Trail and LiveNF target area in the City of Niagara Falls for changes!
