Creating Healthy Communities

Creating Healthy Schools and Communities (CHSC), funded by the NYS Department of Health, is a five year grant effort utilizing a coordinated, multi-sector approach to increase demand for and access to healthy, affordable foods and opportunities for daily physical activity to reduce the risk of chronic disease in high-need communities and school districts. CHSC of CCE Niagara works with the Niagara Falls and Lackawanna school districts and communities.

Creating Healthy Communities Deliverables:

Healthy Food Retail

  • Increase the availability of healthy drinks, fruits and vegetables, and low-sodium products in small food retail venues

Food Standards

  • Establish standards for foods purchased and/or served by worksites, municipalities, hospitals, and community organizations.
  • Standards cover beverage vending machines, food vending machines, cafeteria/cafĂ© meals, and meetings sponsored by worksites. Nutrition criteria can cover calories, saturated and trans fats, sodium, added sugar and fiber.

Complete Streets

  • Help develop Complete Streets policies or language in municipal comprehensive or transportation plans. Then, we work with partners to ensure the policies or regulations are implemented when streets are being constructed, reconstructed, or maintained.
